Team Sailing 2008

Regional Team Sailing

On the 13th March a team from Meningie travelled to Victor Harbour to compete in the SE Regional Teams Sailing Competition. The team was made up of Hamish Jurgs (Captain), Michelle Crossman (Vice-Captain), Josh Wright, Beth Jurgs, Oliver Crossman and Kaneta Marin. We competed against two Victor Harbour and three Kangaroo Island teams over 2 days.

We competed in 10 races during the Regatta and won 6, beating every team except the two strongest Kangaroo Island teams who won last year’s state titles.

The weather conditions were difficult, with strong winds that were constantly changing direction, making for challenging sailing. Coming 3rd overall meant that we did not qualify for the championship competition at state level, but we will head to Port Adelaide in the middle of April to take part in the regatta fleet racing. Overall we were pleased with our results, considering we had very little chance to train together due to low water levels in the lake.

SA Schools Team Sailing State Regatta

On 18th April in the middle of the school holidays, one team from Meningie sailed at the 2008 South Australian Teams Racing State Championship, sailed in the Port River. Meningie qualified for the regatta division at our regional championship which was held at Victor Harbour earlier this year. The first day was spend dividing up the regatta divison into 2 groups, B Pool and C Pool. The championship division started racing to qualify for the national competition. We had a bumpy start to the competition, with a few early losses, but we pulled ourselves together and scraped into the B Pool. That night we were involved in a quiz night, with mental and physical challenges. Out of 8 teams we came equal 3rd.

The next day was good, with moderate winds and clear weather. We got off to a slow start but by the afternoon we had some really good wins to our name. Sunday was similar to the day before, with good conditions for sailing. We managed to win more races than the previous day. We ended up coming 6th out of 8 in the B Pool. St Joseph’s from Pt Lincoln and Kingscote Area School won the championship and will be going to the National Championships.

2007 saw the team sailing group travel the most kilometres ever with regional competition at Kingscote on Kangaroo Island and the State competition at Port Lincoln in the April holidays, a 1700 kilometre round trip.

In preparation for these competitions a dedicated band of year 7 to 12 sailors maintained a regular practice every Saturday morning and Monday night working on their sailing skills and developing race strategies of attack and defence.
During the sailing season water levels in the lake began to drop with final practices for the States at levels close to record lows.
Regionals were held in week 7 of term 1 in challenging conditions. The team’s focus in practices had been to develop effective mark traps and they used these well in races over the two days. Meningie secured second position to Kangaroo Island and thus direct entry into the A-pool at the States.

As the States approached it was great to see ex-team sailors come out to practices offering advice and competition. We journeyed to Port Lincoln knowing the task before us was going to be difficult. We were not disappointed. Competition in the A-pool was intense to say the least. The top eight school teams and a visiting team from New Zealand battled it out over 3 days. 16 other lower ranked teams competed on a separate course. Meningie secured seventh position with a nail-biting win against Walford on the last day of the competition.

I would like to congratulate all members of the team for their commitment during the season and the manner in which they conducted themselves at competition. Ashley Crossman as captain farewelled us this year and is to be commended for her dedication over five years.Meningie Area School

Josh Wright and Michelle Crossman were selected by Yachting South Australia to attend the Cook Island Team Training Regatta. In July they flew to Rarotonga Island with other representatives from schools in South Australia and interstate. We look forward to the skills they developed being passed on to other team members.

Finally I would like to thank parents for their continued support which has allowed team sailing to be so successful.

Lake Albert water levels continue to decline and at the time of writing levels have receded leaving half the jetty pylons out of the water. The regional competition is scheduled for Meningie in 2008 however given the serious state of the River Murray inflows it is likely another venue will have to be used.
